A London-Inspired Solution to Maximising Natural Light London-based Andy Martin Architecture’s renovation of a Georgian house combines both intelligent, refined design with an innovative solution to maximising natural light. Perf House, located in the central London district of Belgravia, uses only a few carefully selected materials to create its elegant aesthetic. The company has long been renowned amongst London’s restauranteurs and chefs for his extensive experience in building insightful, elegant spaces. In addition to this, as well as working on larger cultural, retail and public projects, Andy and his company are involved with a wide range of individual clients in conceiving and renovating residential projects to iconic status. Perf House is one such residential project. The work not only involved the total redesigning a five-storey property from scratch, but also re-envisioning the traditional Georgian-home experience for the twenty-first century. The result was this raw, crisp and detailed interior, including one feature that brings the familiarity of London’s streets indoors. We met up with lead designer Andy Martin to find out more about Perf House. THE PLUS: How did the idea of bringing London’s street lighting solution off the street and into the Perf House come about? Andy Martin: We saw this as a more appropriate solution than placing the typical large glass floor panels, giving both the ground and basement a more inner-city urban feel. TP: Why did you opt for circular paving lights rather than square? AM: The choice was made really based on aesthetics – we liked the softness of circular aperture as opposed to the square form. TP: How important was the consideration of natural light for this project? AM: This was part of the brief, to achieve as much openness and light into the basement floor. TP: The style is markedly different from your other residential projects – what inspired the use of materials that give a raw feel? AM: The materials chosen were to create more warmth and texture to produce a modern warehouse inner-city atmosphere, which the clients were after. TP: Would you like to live in the Perf House? AM: Of course. We were very happy with the results. The space is visually dynamic with movement and texture. This compact house is a perfect fit for a small family or couple.
