Spacecraft-Inspired, Eco-Friendly Lighting Finnish interior lighting designers and manufacturers Woodlabo are a passionate bunch when it comes to nature and its relationship with space. Their latest inspired lighting collection, Eagle, was inspired by the ‘Eagle’ lunar module which took the first men to the moon in 1969. Reworking the design of the spacecraft’s fuselage, the resulting pieces Eagle, Orbit, Landing, Moon, and Lift Off could better be described as contemporary illumination sculptures than simple lighting. Eagle: The five-piece collection, made principally out of birch plywood panels, is inspired by various stages of the space mission, from lift-off to orbit. Each of the hanging lamps, with aluminium light enclosures inside, are made from panels spaced a few millimetres apart in order to let enough light through and accentuate the outlines. Currently based in France, working only with wood from European sustainable forests, using the offcuts of their minimum-waste designs to heat their own studio, and partnering only with other professionals within a 300km radius, they are the embodiment of the eco-friendly culture. In this series, the archipelago of Turku in Finland is the impressive backdrop for the collection, perfectly encapsulating the marriage between the nature Woodlabo protects and the space by which they are inspired.
