These Vintage Illustrations Use A Singular Image To Create An Unending Pattern

You would be hard pressed to find anyone who is not mesmerized as a child by a kaleidoscope, the repeating pattern, merging colours and images, to create visual illusions. Creative firm, Puntuale, have created the adult version using vintage illustrations of animals: Patternimals.

The designers love for these antique natural images and the intricate intertwining of patterns lead them to create these two series of animal illustrations. Both series use dark colours, the kind of palette found in a dusty antique shop, full of old treasures – they are gothic and at times, menacing. From hawk-eyed birds with detailed blue feathers to gormless looking schools of fish, the repetitive images are identical yet give the perception of individuality.

Transfixing, colourful and yet strangely calming, both series are bear an air of the hallucogenic, they provide a trip into a warped natural world.
